The Rats of Tobruk Service 2019

Five Dock RSL Sub-Branch

Veterans, family and friends held a service at the Rats of Tobruk Memorial at 11am on 7th April 2019 remembering the diggers who fought and died in the North African campaign.

The Siege of Tobruk was a confrontation that lasted 241 days between Axis and Allied forces in North Africa during the Western Desert Campaign of
World War Two.

The “Rats of Tobruk” was the name given to the soldiers of the garrison who held the Libyan port of Tobruk against the Afrika Corps during the Siege.

The garrison, commanded by Lieutenant General Leslie Morshead, consisted of the 9th Australian Division (20th, 24th, and 26th Brigades), the 18th Brigade of the 7th Australian Division, four regiments of British artillery and some Indian troops.

Remembrance Sunday 2018

Five Dock RSL Sub-Branch

100 years since the founding of Five Dock RSL Sub Branch; REAL, living, war heroes and Five Dock local area school children were among a diverse crowd of around 300 who gathered to honour those who have served in the Australian Defence Forces and pay homage to the thousands who never returned home, at the 2018 Five Dock RSL Sub Branch memorial ceremony, at the Five Dock War Memorial, on Sunday 22 April 2018.

This video highlights the events of the day.

VIP guest of Honour, Commodore Chris Smallhorn, Commander of the Fleet Air Arm, HMAS Albatross, Nowra, captivated the crowd with a brilliant, enlightened, positive, presentation on the importance of remembering those who died and suffered to ensure Australians live peacefully and in freedom. He commended all the children for participating, whilst on school holidays, encouraged to observe this special day, by the Five Dock RSL schools program.
